Tyrosine is one of the 20 Amino Acids which are an important class of organic compounds that contain both the amino (NH2) and carboxyl (COOH) groups. Of these 20 acids, all serve as the building blocks of proteins (see Protein). Known as the standard, or alpha, amino acids, they comprise alanine, arginine, asparagine, aspartic acid, cysteine, glutamic acid, glutamine, glycine, histidine, isoleucine, leucine, lysine, methionine, phenylalanine, proline, serine, threonine, tryptophan, tyrosine, and valine. All 20 are constructed according to the same  general formula.

Thyroxine, also tetraiodothyronine (T4), is the main hormone (see Hormone) secreted by the thyroid gland. The function of this and the other thyroid hormone, triiodothyronine (T3), is to increase the cellular rate of carbohydrate metabolism and of protein synthesis and breakdown. 

The hormones are synthesized in the thyroid by combining iodine with the amino acid tyrosine (see Amino Acids) and are secreted into the blood as a complex with the protein plasma globulin.

L-Tyrosine is a precursor to the neurotransmitters dopamine, norepinephrine and epinephrine, and to enkephalins (special peptides that subdue messages of physical discomfort such as pain.) 

Sufficient dopamine is absolutely essential to a healthy sex life and can be stimulated by the drug, Apomorphine HCL which is the main ingredient of the sexual dysfunction drug, Uprima.

Both synthesis and secretion are regulated by, and in turn regulate the formation of, a hormone secreted by the pituitary gland. Thyroxine was first isolated in 1919 by the American biochemist Edward Calvin Kendall and was synthesized in 1927 by the British biochemist Charles Harington. Synthetic thyroxine is now used in treating thyroid-deficiency conditions such as cretinism and goiter.
